Skin Concern
Scarring and Stretch Marks

Scarring and stretch marks are common skin concerns that can affect individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Scarring and stretch marks can result from a range of factors which include rapid growth (either through the teen years, pregnancy or weight gain), hormonal changes, injury, surgery or skin conditions such as acne, eczema and more. Skin imperfections can severely impact a person’s confidence and self-esteem.

Acne scars are a prevalent type of scarring that can arise from severe or chronic acne. Acne scars can be pitted or raised and may vary in severity.

Stretch marks which are medically known as “striae” occur when the skin stretches rapidly due to pregnancy, weight gain, or growth spurts. Stretch marks will commonly appear as pink or red streaks across parts of the body and overtime will fade to a silvery-white colour.

Prevention and early intervention are key to managing both scarring and stretch marks. As well as the range of highly effective treatments at Australian Laser and Skin, people suffering from acne scars or stretch marks should maintain a healthy lifestyle, stay hydrated and use skincare that can prevent or support the reduction of their appearance.

Common Causes of Scarring And Stretch Marks

Common Causes

Scarring and stretch marks are the result of different underlying processes within the skin and body that cause damage to the skin’s structure.

Scarring:

  • Injuries: Cuts, burns, or surgical incisions disrupt the skin’s integrity, triggering a natural healing process. The body produces collagen to mend the wound, but the new tissue often appears different from the surrounding skin, forming a scar.
  • Acne: Severe or deep acne lesions damage the skin’s deeper layers. As the skin heals, it can form depressed or raised scars.

Stretch Marks:

  • Rapid Growth: During pregnancy, puberty, or rapid weight gain, the skin stretches beyond its normal capacity. This rapid stretching can cause the dermis (middle layer of skin) to tear, resulting in stretch marks.
  • Hormonal Changes: Hormones, particularly corticosteroids, can weaken the skin’s elasticity, making it more prone to stretching and the development of stretch marks.

Whether it is scarring or stretch marks, the skin’s collagen and elastin fibres are disrupted which is how they are formed. Skin imperfections often appear as discoloured lines on the skin, which can be challenging to eliminate completely but may be improved with treatment.
