How Does Skin Needling Work?

Skin Needling is a safe, tested and reliable procedure that involves creating rejuvenating microscopic punctures in the skin using a specialised device. We use either a Roller or Fractional Pen device depending on the skin condition and the area being treated. The process involves multiple needles at various depths acting together in the specific area of the treated condition.

The treatment creates tiny punctures in the skin that encourage the production of new collagen, known as collagen induction, and will progressively work to fill in the scar, stretch mark, or wrinkles being treated, making them less noticeable and in some cases removing them altogether. Each patient’s situation is different, and results can vary.

Other skin rejuvenating techniques utilise methods that can often remove the healthy top layer of skin. Skin Needling creates dermal stimulation without damaging the outer layer, maximising the outward appearance of the area and speeding up the healing process at a much faster rate than other procedures.

The procedure is proven to offer many benefits and avoids some of the usual skin care related worries that other procedures can pose, such as the risk of permanent structural damage, increased sun sensitivity, hypo, and hyper pigmentation. Visible Skin Needling results will usually require multiple sessions. Improvement in skin tone and texture will start to show within 6-8 weeks and will continue to improve drastically in the following months, depending on what condition has been treated. After a series of procedures, a significant improvement will be noticeable, including smoother skin, improved skin tone, reduction of scars and pitting, improved texture of stretch marks, and a reduction in fine lines.

  • It’s essential to use an SPF30+ sunscreen every day and avoid sun exposure or any other form of tanning prior to treatment

  • Avoid sun exposure or any other form of tanning and use an SPF30+ sunscreen every day.
  • Soothe your skin by using the specialised post-care products recommended until the area has settled completely. Do not use any hash cleansing agents such as soap or foaming cleansers.
  • Do not use any products containing any active ingredients or exfoliants for at least four days after treatment. This includes: AHA’s (Glycolic and Lactic Acids) BHA’s (Salicylic Acid, Vitamin C, Benzoyl Peroxide, Vitamin A, and Retinol).
  • Avoid any highly perfumed products or cosmetics for at least four days.We also advise that patients refrain from performing the following activities until at least 48 hours after Skin Needling treatment:Excessive gym or cardiovascular exerciseSauna or pool sessions in chlorinated waterSolariumsSpray or self-tanningCosmetic tattooingShaving (12-24 hours)

Does it hurt?

This treatment is not completely pain free, the sensation you should feel is likened to light scratching as well as some pressure during the Skin Needling process.

Are there any side effects?

Post-treatment, you will experience mild to moderate redness, swelling and sensitivity that can last between 12-48 hours. Some clients have experienced light bruising that can last for roughly 2-3 days, however this is normal due to the increased pressure applied. After a few days, the area will start to feel dry and tight, which may feel a little rough to touch. Once the dryness has reduced your skin will appear fresh and radiant and the effects of collagen formation will continue for up to 12 weeks.

Is skin needling good for your skin?

Skin needling is a highly effective method of treating various skin concerns and conditions such as ageing, acne scarring, and stretch marks. Skin needling treatment assists in the production of collagen and elastin in the skin, resulting in a more youthful and rejuvenated skin.

How many sessions are required?

This can depend on the specific concern being targeted, but generally, you can expect to undergo 3 to 8 sessions for the best results. In an initial consultation at our clinic, we will assess your skin, inform you of how many sessions are recommended, and show you skin needling before and after photos so you can see what’s possible.

What skin needling after care is required?

After a skin needling session, it’s recommended that you avoid picking at any dry or flaky skin and apply moisturiser 2 to 3 times a day. You should also avoid sun exposure for several weeks after treatment, and wait 24 hours before wearing makeup. For any redness and inflammation, a cooling face mask can be applied to soothe the skin. Our clinic will provide you with further skin needling after care instructions to follow after your treatment.

How long after skin needling can I wear makeup?

We recommend you do not wear makeup for 24 hours post treatment. However, If you choose to do so, a mineral or non-comedogenic makeup is recommended.

How often should you get skin needling?

Depending on your skin condition, we recommend a course of 3-8 treatments once every 4-6 weeks. Some skin conditions may require more treatments.

How long after skin needling can you have anti-wrinkle treatment?

After skin needling it is best to wait a minimum of 7 days, or until the skin can completely healed before having anti-wrinkle treatment.
