About Veins

Veins are an important part of the body’s circulatory system. While arteries pump oxygenated blood from the heart throughout the body, veins are responsible for returning oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart from various parts of the body. There are deep veins that run deep within the body to help circulate blood, but also more superficial veins which run close to the skin’s surface. As we age, our skin thins, as well as changes to our muscles and fat pads, and of course bone structure. As such, superficial veins, closer to the skin, can become more obvious. Further, veins can become enlarged and twisted, looking visually unappealing.

Superficial veins can be found throughout the body, but they are most commonly visible in the arms and legs. In the arms, the superficial veins, such as the basilic and cephalic veins, can be seen traversing the forearms and hands. In the legs, prominent superficial veins include the great saphenous vein and small saphenous vein, which run along the thighs and calves.

Laser therapy can be highly effective in treating superficial veins.
